Double Glazing Replacement Windows – Finding an approved supplier in Warwickshire

I hear about energy saving double glazing – what is it?

I have been thinking of installing replacement windows for a while now and kept being told that I would be wise to check out companies offering good rated energy efficient windows with a BFRC window energy rating. This sounds great but what is it all about?

So who are BFRC?

This stands for the British Fenestration Rating Council which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Glass and Glazing Federation. The rating scheme for Energy Efficient Windows is a voluntary using energy labels specifically made for windows but in some ways similar to those we now see on fridges and washing machines etc.
This sets a very stringent standard and the chart is rated from A through to G with A being the most energy efficient. Replacement windows that are rated A to C are also allowed to carry the Energy Saving Recommended logo which may only be issued by the Energy Saving Trust.
There is quite a lot of information on the label helping you make an informed choice and the information covers such things as how well the product will:

  • Helping you contain and conserve heat within your building in the winter
  • Resist condensation
  • Keep out the wind and reduce draughts
  • Help with sound insulation

This is a fairly new concept which tests the levels of heat escape from windows and doors in order to rate a houses thermal efficiency. Following the Kyoto agreement it was agreed by the UK Government that from 2009 new build installations within the UK had to conform to a minimum C rating.

So what are the basics?

Every house loses some degree of heat / energy through its windows, but installing high energy rated replacement windows will help to reduce this loss, which will lower your energy bills, whilst helping to keep your house warmer. Another added benefit is that because the double glazed windows are well insulated, they will also help to keep the house quieter by reducing the noise levels entering via the windows.
In very simple terms double glazed windows have two layers of glass which have a sealed gap between them, creating an insulating barrier.
As energy costs increase, the published energy ratings are starting to be taken seriously by UK consumers, and are now a factor to be considered as well as the type and style of replacement double glazed windows that we select.

So what benefits can I expect to see from my double glazing Windows?

  • Smaller energy bills
  • A smaller carbon footprint
  • A more comfortable home
  • Fewer draughts and cold spots.
  • Peace and quiet
  • Reduced condensation
  • Perceived added value to the property
  • Possibly easier to sell
  • Possible low maintenance dependent upon my choice of frames

Which frames are best for my home?

Clearly much of this is a matter of choice and will depend a great deal about the style and period of your property as to what will compliment it best.

Every type of commonly used frame material has windows available in each of the energy ratings – but a quick run-down is as follows:

  • UPVC / PVC-u frames – by far the most popular now – strong and durable and can be recycled, maintenance free.
  • Timber Frames – may have a low environmental impact and may be better suited to conservation areas – high maintenance required
  • Aluminium Frames – Very durable and high security rating – not common today so reduces supplier options – may be expensive in comparison – recycle able
  • Composite frames – made up of an inner timber frame covered with either aluminium or plastic – reduced maintenance

What glass should I use?
The most energy efficient glass for double glazing is low emissivity (Low-E) glass. It contains an invisible coating on one of the panes which makes the glass reflective – it keeps the warmth out in winter and the heat is reflected back in the summer.

Building regulations

There are a number of requirements which not only apply to the energy efficiency requirements but also to strength of glass used in certain areas and even where say bay windows will replace a current “flat” window. Regulations are still being developed and also vary between say England and Wales and Northern Ireland.

I would recommend that you speak to your local planning authority and building control inspectorate before starting, especially if you are planning a DIY installation or a non FENSA regulated installer. If you have selected a supplier and installer you can simply check on the FENSA website to see if they are members.

FENSA guarantees that its installers and frames comply with building regulations, and upon completion, you should get a certificate that demonstrates the installation has been completed in compliance with building regulations.
Just one final point that I would add – the window replacements will help with the reduction in your energy costs and, if you made a wise choice and called in the right company and installer, you should now have added more elegance and style to compliment your home. It is worthwhile adding, that if you have really researched and found the best solution for heat loss through windows, please don’t forget to also get you cavity wall, lost insulation and general draft proofing checked out at the same time.

Warwickshire – Did you know…?

Warwickshire is perhaps best known for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare from Stratford-upon-Avon. The county has also produced other literary figures such as George Eliot (from near Nuneaton), Rupert Brooke (from Rugby), and Michael Drayton from Hartshill.

The south of the county is largely rural and sparsely populated, and includes a small area of the Cotswolds. The only town in the south of Warwickshire is Shipston-on-Stour. The highest point in the county, at 261 m (856 ft), is Ebrington Hill on the border with Gloucestershire, GR SP187426 at its southwest extremity.

Warwickshire played a key part in the English Civil War, with the Battle of Edgehill and other skirmishes taking place in the county.
